Antoine-Louis Barye
Antoine-Louis BARYE (1795-1875) was a French Romantic sculptor and painter from the early 19th century who was among the most renowned animal artists of his time. His sculptures depict many European forest and domestic animals. Tigers, lions, and exotic animals were also very popular at that time and often used as models during his frequent visits to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. They are among his finest works.
A keen connoisseur of animal anatomy, he depicted the living nature, attitude, and movements of these subjects with great precision.
Barbedienne Bronze
The Barbedienne foundry continued the posthumous edition of Barye’s work with great fidelity and a quality that ensured the success of its workshops. Ferdinand Barbedienne, an innovative and visionary entrepreneur of the Industrial Revolution, brought art into bourgeois homes with his editions and reproductions. These series were developed in different sizes thanks to the association with Achille Collas and his mechanical reduction process.
This was a revolution because art had until then consisted of unique works reserved for wealthy patrons or major institutional powers.
